Snoring, traffic, thin walls and noisy neighbours are among the most common reasons people lose sleep, and there are two very different ways to deal with them. How does white noise work?
A white noise machine produces a steady, even sound that fills the quiet between disruptive noises, so a sudden car door or a creaking floorboard no longer stands out sharply against silence. The effect is called masking: what wakes you is usually not absolute volume but a sudden change in volume, and a constant background flattens that contrast.
Masking works best when the added sound covers the same frequencies as the noise you want hidden. Earplugs work the opposite way, physically reducing the volume of everything reaching your ears. They also have the obvious advantage of portability. A pair costs a few pounds, travels in a pocket, and works identically in a hotel room, on a night train or in a spare room at Christmas. The trade-offs are comfort - side sleepers often feel the plug press against the pillow - and the fact that they attenuate everything, including sounds you may want to hear.
What do the SNR and NRR numbers actually mean?
Earplugs carry a rated attenuation figure, and the label depends on where the product is sold. SNR (Single Number Rating) is the European figure; NRR (Noise Reduction Rating) is the American one. More important is that both are laboratory figures, measured with a trained, near-perfect fit. Real-world performance is lower, often much lower, because ear canals differ and most people do not seat a plug fully. For sleep, that is not the problem it sounds like. Chase the highest number on the shelf and you mostly buy a bulkier plug that is harder to sleep on.
Why does bass through a wall defeat both?
This is the case neither approach handles well, and it is worth knowing before you spend anything.
Low-frequency sound - the thump of a bass line, the rumble of lorries, a washing machine on the other side of a party wall - carries through building structure rather than air, and it is the hardest part of the spectrum to attenuate with anything small and passive. Which is better for snoring?
For a snoring partner, both help and many people combine them. Earplugs lower the overall volume of the snoring, while white noise smooths over the peaks so the rhythm is less obvious.
Snoring is a hard case for a single solution because it is loud, close, broadband and irregular all at once. The irregularity is what makes it so wakeful - it is the pattern of rise and fall, not the average level, that keeps pulling attention back. How loud should white noise be?
Quieter than most people assume, and quieter than most machines are capable of.
The clearest published evidence comes from the infant market, where the question has been studied directly. A 2014 study in Pediatrics measured 14 infant sleep machines at maximum volume and found that every one exceeded 50 A-weighted decibels at 30 cm - the limit recommended for hospital nurseries - and that three exceeded 85 dBA, a level that would breach adult occupational exposure limits if sustained across a full night. Adults are not infants, and a machine on a bedside table for one night is not an occupational exposure. But the finding is still the useful one for anyone running a machine for eight hours a night, every night: these devices can comfortably reach levels you would not choose deliberately, and the volume dial goes far higher than the job requires. Set it just loud enough to blur the noise you are masking, put some distance between the machine and your head, and leave the top of the dial alone.
Will you still hear your alarm?
This is the question people usually only think about after oversleeping.
Earplugs attenuate broadly, so a quiet phone alarm on the far side of the room is a genuine risk.
